About the Champion Mine Trail Race

The course launches from Broad Street in Nevada City and heads into the surrounding forest, mixing pavement, gravel, and single-track trail. There are real climbs throughout, a swinging bridge over Deer Creek, and sections that run past old mining landmarks. The terrain shifts enough to keep things interesting, and the tree cover through the pines is dense for most of the route.

Several distance options are available, from a short run up to a half-marathon. The race benefits the Bear Yuba Land Trust and helps fund local trail work in the area, so post-race conversation tends to lean that direction.

Common Questions About the Champion Mine Trail Race

Will I finish last at the Champion Mine Trail Race?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:28:24, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:05:07, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Champion Mine Trail Race a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (143 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Champion Mine Trail Race?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:30:13 while the median finisher took 2:28:24. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
