About the Capital City River Run

The course starts on Michigan Ave outside the Lansing Center, then winds through downtown streets, across MSU campus, and onto the Lansing River Trail before finishing in Adado Park. It covers real urban ground, so the surface changes under your feet as you move from road to trail. The route has a point-to-point shape, which means no looping back.

Packet pickup runs the day before at the science center on the river, with an early race-morning option at the same location. Parking is available there off Cedar St, but Michigan Ave closes early on race morning, so plan your approach accordingly. A bag drop is available near the start, and the truck moves to Rotary Park so you can collect your things at the finish.

Common Questions About the Capital City River Run

Will I finish last at the Capital City River Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:04:44, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:39:42, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Capital City River Run a good first 13.1 Miles?

A field of 697 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Capital City River Run?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:08:52 while the median finisher took 2:04:44. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
