About the CanLake Ultras

The course circles Canandaigua Lake on roads, so you are never far from the water. The terrain is mostly flat to rolling, but there are several real climbs along the way, including one hill the locals have a name for. The longer route does the full loop; the shorter option picks up partway through on the back half, where the climbing is easier.

Runners can arrange a personal handler to meet them at points along the course, which is a meaningful option for a race this long. There are rules attached to that arrangement, and the race handbook spells them out clearly; a handler who breaks them puts the runner's result at risk.

Common Questions About the CanLake Ultras

Will I finish last at the CanLake Ultras?

Almost certainly not. Half the 50 Miles field finished slower than 10:08:23, and the last recorded finisher came in around 12:28:34, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the CanLake Ultras a good first 50 Miles?

It is a small race (46 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 50 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the CanLake Ultras?

The 50 Miles winner ran 6:22:31 while the median finisher took 10:08:23. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
