About the Buzz Sawyer Western Maryland Marathon/Half Marathon/10k

The course runs on the Western Maryland Rail Trail, a paved rail-trail that heads out of Hancock toward Little Orleans and comes back the same way. It is flat and smooth the whole way, and marathon runners cover that stretch twice. The trail sits beside the C&O Canal, so the scenery is water and tree canopy rather than roads and traffic.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at Buddylou's, with a second window at the start area on race morning. Parking is available at a couple of lots along the trail. There are aid stations spread across the course, and post-race refreshments wait at the finish.

Common Questions About the Buzz Sawyer Western Maryland Marathon/Half Marathon/10k

Will I finish last at the Buzz Sawyer Western Maryland Marathon/Half Marathon/10k?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:08:16, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:50:24, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Buzz Sawyer Western Maryland Marathon/Half Marathon/10k a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (63 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Buzz Sawyer Western Maryland Marathon/Half Marathon/10k?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:17:25 while the median finisher took 2:08:16. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
