About the Breaking the Barriers 5K

The course runs a couple of laps inside Veterans Park, so you pass through the same stretch more than once and always know where you are. The terrain is park-style running, nothing technical, and water is available along the way. The race benefits veteran and first responder mental wellness, and that cause is present in the atmosphere.

Race-morning pickup is the standard arrangement, starting well before the gun. There is no separate pre-race evening to plan around, which keeps things simple if you are driving in that morning.

Common Questions About the Breaking the Barriers 5K

Will I finish last at the Breaking the Barriers 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 41:18, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:09:32, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Breaking the Barriers 5K a good first 5K?

It is a small race (68 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Breaking the Barriers 5K?

The 5K winner ran 21:42 while the median finisher took 41:18. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
