About the Bizz Johnson

The course follows an old railroad grade through Lassen National Forest, so the footing is smooth and the route runs mostly linear. After a short climb near the start, the trail tilts downhill through forested terrain before entering the Susan River Canyon, where orange walls close in, wooden railroad bridges cross the river repeatedly, and a pair of former tunnels cut through the hillside near the end.

Buses carry runners from the finish area out to the remote trailheads, so no personal shuttle is needed. Packet pickup runs the afternoon before at the historic train depot in Susanville, with another window early on race morning.

Common Questions About the Bizz Johnson

Will I finish last at the Bizz Johnson?

Almost certainly not. Half the race field finished slower than 4:25:09, and the last recorded finisher came in around 7:43:22, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Bizz Johnson a good first race?

It is a small race (63 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first race, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Bizz Johnson?

The race winner ran 2:53:31 while the median finisher took 4:25:09. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
