About the Big Bear Stampede

These trail races sit just outside Yellowstone National Park, with open views of Electric Peak and the other prominent peaks along the park's northwest edge. The longer course has a real climb early on, then settles into the back half after you have crested it. The shorter course keeps things manageable underfoot while still feeling like genuine trail running.

Post-race, there is fruit, baked goods, water, sports drink, and beer at the finish. Awards go several deep overall and cover a handful of age groups in both distances.

Common Questions About the Big Bear Stampede

Will I finish last at the Big Bear Stampede?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 39:57, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:00:01, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Big Bear Stampede a good first 5K?

It is a small race (56 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Big Bear Stampede?

The 5K winner ran 22:28 while the median finisher took 39:57. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
