About the Big Bear SquaTCh North

This is a trail race in Harriman State Park, and it earns the word tough. The course involves real climbing, exposed scrambles, and ridge-top views that open up when you least expect them. The terrain underfoot is classic northeast technical trail: roots, rocks, and enough elevation to remind you this is a mountain, not a path through the woods.

Registration fees go directly toward trail maintenance in the park, so there is a tangible connection between running the race and keeping the trails in shape. The event is co-organized by a regional trails nonprofit, which shapes the whole feel of the morning, more stewardship than spectacle.

Common Questions About the Big Bear SquaTCh North

Will I finish last at the Big Bear SquaTCh North?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 3:09:23, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:20:35, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Big Bear SquaTCh North a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (147 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Big Bear SquaTCh North?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:46:27 while the median finisher took 3:09:23. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
