About the Back Roads Half & 10k
The courses run on gravel back roads outside Red Lodge, with paved stretches here and there. The surroundings are rural, open, and pointed toward the Beartooth range. Both routes are mostly rolling, but each has a real climb early on, and both finish with a steep drop on trail. Dogs are not permitted, as the course passes working livestock and their guardian dogs.
The half and the shorter distance finish in different spots, so runners doing the shorter option loop back to the start and then drive to the finish area for the post-race gathering. Strollers are allowed on the courses, though the organizers are upfront that the terrain makes it a serious undertaking.
