About the Alaska Salmon Runs

The courses follow an old railroad bed across the Copper River delta, so the ground underfoot is firm and the grade stays gentle the whole way. Mountains and glaciers sit in the distance, and the rivers and lakes around the route make it feel genuinely remote, even though you are never far from help.

Runners heading out on the longer distances board shuttle buses from race headquarters to reach their start lines. After finishing, the gathering moves to the Pioneer Igloo on First Street for a salmon barbecue with side dishes and dessert, open to all, and race winners are announced there.
